How do I use SmarterMail Sync?

The following article explains how to use SmarterMail Sync.  SmarterMail Sync can be used to sync contacts, calendar items and tasks with Microsoft Outlook and/or Pocket PC.  The SmarterMail Sync software must first be downloaded from SmarterMail and then installed on your local machine.  Once the software is installed, you will need to configure your account.  The following instructions pertain to Microsoft Outlook.

To install SmarterMail Sync, please follow these steps:

  1. Open a browser window and go to one of the following URLs:
    • http://mail.domainname.com
    • http://mail#.safesecureweb.com (this address is provided in the setup email)
  2. Login using your email address and password.
  3. From the top menu bar, click Settings.
  4. From the left side bar, expand My Settings and click SmarterMail Client Utilities.
  5. Click download for SmarterMail Sync for Outlook 2000.
  6. Select a location to download the file and click OK.
  7. Once the download completes, navigate to the download location and double click the install file to begin the installation.
  8. Click Next to begin the install Wizard.
  9. Accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next.
  10. Click Install to begin the installation.
  11. Click Finish once the installation completes.

To configure your account through Outlook, please follow these steps:

  1. In Outlook, expand SmarterMail Sync and click Account Settings.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Enter the requested information:
    • Name: enter your name
    • SmarterMail URL: enter the URL for the SmarterMail Web interface (http://mail.domainname.com or http://mail#.safesecureweb.com)
    • Email Address: enter the full email address
    • Password: enter the password for the email address

  4. Click Next.
  5. Click Finish.
  6. Expand Synchronize and click the account you just created.

To configure your iPhone (software version 1.x) for email, please follow these steps:

  1. From the Dashboard, click Settings
  2. Under Settings, select Mail
  3. Select Add Account…
  4. Select Other as the type of account.
  5. Select POP
  6. Enter the requested information:
    • Name: the name of the mail user
    • Address: the email address of the mail user
    • Description: a description of the mail user
    • Host Name: enter the mail server mail.yourdomain.com (incoming mail server and external mail server)
    • User Name: enter the full email address (incoming mail server and external mail server)
    • Password: enter the users password (incoming mail server and external mail server)
  7. Click Save
  8. If you see a message that says “Cannot Connect Using SSL”, click Yes when asked to setup the account without SSL.
  9. Click Save if prompted.
  10. Click Settings for the account you just created.
  11. Click Advanced
  12. Set Incoming Uses SSL and Outgoing Use SSL to OFF
  13. Under Incoming settings, click Authentication and select Password
  14. Under Outgoing settings, click Authentication and select Password

To configure your iPhone (software version 2.x) for email, please follow these steps:

  1. From the Dashboard, click Settings
  2. Under Settings, select Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  3. Select Add Account…
  4. Select Other as the type of account.
  5. Click Add Mail Account.
  6. Enter the requested information:
    • Name: the name of the mail user
    • Address: the email address of the mail user
    • Password: enter the users password (incoming mail server and external mail server)
    • Description: a description of the mail user
  7. Click Save
  8. Click POP and enter the Incoming Mail Server information:
    • Host Name: enter the mail server address
    • User Name: enter the full email address
    • Password: enter the users password
  9. Scroll down and enter the Outgoing Mail Server information:
    • Host Name: enter the mail server address
    • User Name: enter the full email address
    • Password: enter the users password
  10. Click Save.
  11. If you see a message that says “Cannot Connect Using SSL”, click Yes when asked to setup the account without SSL.
  12. The Advanced settings for the account will be displayed and do not need to be changed unless there are issues or you wish to change the defaults (how long messages stay on server, how often to delete messages in Deleted Items, etc).
