Outlook 2007 Send/Receive Hangs

Even the geeks have problems

Over the last few days, I have had issues with my Outlook email hanging on send and receive.  Under normal circumstances, this occurs when you open the application or every few minutes or when directed.  Essentially this is the time when the application “Outlook” checks in with the email server to see if there is anything new to download and send out anything you have queued for delivery.  A more in depth explanation of the whole email process is indicated, and I need to write another post specifically explaining that.  But if you have found your way here because of this problem, let’s get to it and get on with our lives.

First, not every solution fits every problem…I found this solution with the heading “SOLUTION FOR HANGING SEND/RECEIVE FIX ONLY APPLIES TO VISTA but further comments in the thread indicated that others had resolved their problems in the Windows XP home version environment.  Of course, little faith on my part was needed as I currently am running Windows XP Pro SP3.  It would be good to point out that this is specifically an Outlook 2007 fix and I can’t verify effectiveness for other versions of Outlook.  That being said, here’s the solution:

  1. First shut down Outlook completely.  Check to make sure that it’s not running in the background.
  2. See Illustration 1: Open your the Run box.
  3. See Illustration 2: Usually this box is populated with the last command entered, maybe it was a directory path or “cmd” which you see in the picture. Regardless, put your pointer in the box and highlight it, then…
  4. See Illustration 3: Enter the following, “netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable” exactly.  You can cut and paste if you like, I find this is easier, but only the code between the quotes not the quotation marks.  Then hit “Ok” (blue arrow).

That should do it.

How do I configure Outlook 2007?

The following article explains how to download mail from your NWA Networks account using Microsoft Outlook 2007, click here for Outlook.

In Outlook 2007, from the Tools menu, select Account Settings.

On the E-mail tab, click New.

Select Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP and click Next.

Check Manually configure server settings or additional server types and click Next.

Select Internet E-mail and click Next.

In the screen below, you need to enter the requested information:

    Your Name: your name

Email Address: the email address the messages will be sent from

    Account Type: POP3

    Incoming Mail server: mail.domainname.xyz

    Outgoing Mail server: mail.domainname.xyz

User Name: the full email address

Password: the password for the email address

Once the info is entered click "More Settings."

Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server and click OK.

Once you click “Ok” you will be taken back to the previous screen.  I suggest clicking on “Test Account Settings” to make sure everything is ok.  After a successful completion of the test, click “Next” and then “Finish.”  Repeat for each individual email account.
